About
This is a blog about innovation, thinking differently, and the impact of technology on the world.
Much of it relates to the Internet, partly because it is the technology I know best, and partly because it’s an endlessly fascinating subject. It’s the most current ‘General Purpose Technology’, as futurists are apt to say…
I’ve called the blog “Suspended Judgement” to remind me that uncertainty is an important and necessary attitude to cultivate. As Edward de Bono once said:
“The purpose of thinking is not to be right, but to be effective. Being effective does eventually involve being right but there is a very important difference between the two. Being right means being right all the time. Being effective means being right only at the end.”
One of the things I try to do is to demystify the world of innovation, and so I like writing about everyday events and settings that remind me of some method, or theory, and allow me to draw simple connections to the things that I read about but that most people don’t.
I write pretty infrequently, and I often just post interesting links and videos here in the meantime, so it might be difficult to find my writing. Everything I’ve written that is more than just a comment on something I have tagged with the word “longpost” and you can see them all from the navigation option with the same name.
Every year, I try to do something that pushes me outside of my comfort zone. Here are some things I’ve done over the last few:
- 2007 - I completed a Masters degree in Politics (international relations and global governance).
- 2008 - I qualified for the University of Sheffield’s University Challenge quiz team, but we got knocked out before reaching the televised stages (bugger!).
- 2009 - I conducted a live web chat from on top of the 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of Anthony Gormley’s One&Other Project.
- 2010 - I gave a talk at the Interesting North conference on the ‘Rise of Poker’ and what we can learn from it.
- 2011 - I helped curate, produce and compere the TEDxSheffield conference, and will be doing so again in 2012.
I am also a consumer beta tester for both Sonos and Boxee - two companies developing great new home entertainment platforms.
And I like taking photos of walls, and occasionally administer the Urban Geometry group on Flickr.
I am self employed and, although I’m not actively looking for work, I am always interested in interesting projects - contact me through twitter if you are in the mind to do something kick-ass, I’m always happy to chat about exciting things!
